Chess pieces are based on Poseidon the god of the sea along with other ancient Greek goddesses, heroes, and creatures. Poseidon of Melos is the king and Athena the queen. The dark squares on the chess board are painted in a multi-color red enamel and the entire board is lacquered to prevent tarnishing.
