Director Yukisada Isao ( Crying Out For Love, in the Center of the World ) transports the stage of Honda Takayoshi's novel from Tokyo to Shanghai in Five Minutes to Tomorrow . The Japanese filmmaker's first Chinese-language film stars Cecilia Liu ( Brotherhood of Blades ) in dual roles as Ruo Lan and Ru Mei, twin sisters with very opposite personalities. Introverted and shy, Ruo Lan is still overcoming a painful breakup when she meets Ryo (Miura Haruma), a young Japanese man living as a watchmaker's apprentice in Shanghai. After Ryo falls for Ruo Lan, he meets Ru Mei a reckless free spirit who is actually jealous of Ruo Lan deep down and filmmaker Tianlun (Joseph Chang). Featuring strong performances by its lead stars (including Miura speaking his own Mandarin dialogue) and gorgeous images of Shanghai, Five Minutes to Tomorrow is a haunting drama about longing, identity and time that also marks a new era in co-productions between China and Japan.
