In 1977, Chen Kuan Tai directed and starred in the period action film Iron Monkey about a young Shaolin-trained hero who masters the monkey-fist style of martial arts. Over three decades later, the martial arts legend again demonstrates the power and agility of monkey kung-fu in The Real Iron Monkey . Directed by Ken Yip ( Kung Fu Chefs ) and produced by Sharon Yang, the film co-stars TVB actors Pierre Ngo Ka Nin and Mandy Ho as well as Mo Mei Lin, Jazz Lam and Ku Feng. Huo Dongge, the aged chairman of the Shanghai Martial Arts Association, is in need of a successor, and there are only two eligible candidates on his list. One is the Association's current executive Kong Peng, who is the son of Association founder Huo Yuanjia's top disciple. The other is Guangdong branch leader Guo Tian. Huo Dongge wants to enlist the legendary Iron Monkey to help safely deliver the membership roster from Guangdong to Shanghai, but Iron Monkey sends his successor, his grandson Zhong, for the responsibility instead. Along the way, different parties appear to steal the roster, including someone whose fighting style resembles that of Iron Monkey.
