Also known as The Carnal Sutra Mat , the erotic Hong Kong period film Yu Pui Tsuen was originally released in 1987, and then retitled and released again in 1996. Directed by Ho Fan ( Hidden Desire ), the film is adapted from the notorious 17th-century erotic novel The Carnal Prayer Mat that also inspired the Sex and Zen series. Four hundred years ago, there was a casanova scholar. One night, he has a dream that starts in joy but ends in utter despair and destruction. He seeks the guidance of a wise monk, only to come out of it further convinced that life is short and one must live to the fullest now. Thus begins his journey through the carnal world. He marries a beautiful woman and indulges in pleasure every night, but it's not enough.
