Six years after making a splash with his award-winning debut Ilo Ilo , Singapore writer-director Anthony Chen returns with his second feature film Wet Season , which was nominated in five categories at the 56th Golden Horse Film Awards. He reunites with Ilo Ilo 's Yeo Yann Yann and Koh Jia Ler for this stellar examination of a middle-aged woman's struggles and inner tempest. Yeo Yann Yann won Best Actress at the Golden Horse Awards for her portrayal of a woman stretched to her limits as she faces a collapsing marriage and an ambiguous relationship with a student. High school teacher Ling (Yeo Yann Yann) is a Malaysian who has lived in Singapore for many years. She has a seemingly picture-perfect marriage with her husband (Christopher Lee), but cracks are beginning to show due to her inability to bear a child. The couple has tried fertility treatment methods repeatedly to no avail. After Ling's father-in-law (Yang Shi Bin) collapses from a stroke, the responsibility of caretaking falls onto her shoulders. At the same time, her job is endlessly frustrating because of her school's indifference towards Chinese language education. During these trying times, she finds a spark of light and solace in her tutorial sessions with Wei Lun (Koh Jia Ler), a teenage boy who loves martial arts. As the rain pours outside, a greater storm brews within for Ling.
