Having won numerous international accolades including the Camera d'Or prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and Best Film at the 50th Golden Horse Awards, Singaporean director Anthony Chen's debut feature Ilo Ilo is a complex, bittersweet and empathetic family drama set against the backdrop of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Centered on the relationship between a Filipino maid and her employer's young child, the film's depiction of their interaction in a dynamic and uncertain environment comes across as a realistic portrayal of modern family relationships, especially since the story is inspired by Chen's personal experience. Ten-year-old schoolboy Lim Jiale (Koh Jia Ler) is a rebellious child with a pregnant working mother Hwee Leng (Yeo Yann Yann) and a father Keng Teck (Chen Tian Wen) who has just lost his job. Fed up with their son's bullying behavior and undergoing enormous pressure in the financial recession, they hire dutiful domestic worker Teresa (Angeli Bayani) who soon becomes an integral part of the family despite their initial unhappy events.
