Twenty years after the classic King of Comedy , Stephen Chow returns with The New King of Comedy ! The comedy king writes and directs an updated story about the trials and tribulations of a passionate bit actor who just needs a break. Continuing his tradition of discovering new actresses, Chow picked the relatively unknown E Jingwen to be the plucky star of the Chinese New Year blockbuster alongside Wang Baoqiang. Filled with nostalgic references to the original King of Comedy , the film is a classic Stephen Chow underdog story with awkward heroes, ridiculous gags, nonsensical comedy and that uncanny ability to stir hearts with tragicomic turns and bittersweet tenacity. Dreamy (E Jingwen) is a background actor who has been futilely chasing her dreams at Hengdian World Studios for over ten years. With her plain appearances, not-so young age and shameless hamming, she constantly gets rejected and mocked even as an extra. But still, Dreamy believes and persists. She's elated when she gets selected for a film starring her childhood idol Marco (Wang Baoqiang), but the arrogant has-been turns out to be a bad actor who lashes out at everyone on set. Shaken awake by Marco's ill treatment and her boyfriend's betrayal, the disillusioned Dreamy realizes it may finally be time to give up on her dream.
