It's tough being a man, as Tora-san found out repeatedly over 49 films from 1969 to 1995. Japan's longest-running film series, Otoko wa Tsurai yo started out as a television drama in 1968 before jumping to the big screen in 1969 with Yamada Yoji at the helm and Atsumi Kiyoshi in the iconic role of traveling salesman Tora-san. For the next 26 years, Tora-san would like timework grace Japan's big screens up to four times a year, continuing his unfortunate romantic adventures around the country. For the Tora-san film series' 50th anniversary, the cast and characters return in the 50th entry Tora-san, Wish You Were Here for reunions and reminiscing. Tora-san, Wish You Were Here catches up with different beloved characters in Tora-san's orbit, including his sister Sakura (Baisho Chieko), brother-in-law Hiroshi (Maeda Gin) and nephew Mitsuo (Yoshioka Hidetaka), who has become a novelist. After a memorial service for Mitsuo's late wife, the family has a gathering and tells boisterous stories about Tora-san. On another day, Mitsuo runs into his first love Izumi (Goto Kumiko) at a bookstore signing. The two visit Tora-san's old girlfriend Lily (Asaoka Ruriko) who shares something unexpected about Tora-san's past. Atsumi Kiyoshi, who passed away in 1996, appears in the film through old footage.
