Based on the award-winning fantasy manga Kujaku Oh by Ogino Makoto, Saga of the Phoenix (1990) is the sequel to the 1988 movie adaptation by the name of Peacock King . Directed by Nam Nai Choi ( The Story of Ricky ) and Lau Sze Yu ( Look Out, Officer! ), the Toho-Golden Harvest co-production creates a mythological world of deities, devils, and demon hunters with some jaw-dropping special effects. Populating that universe is a fine cast of Hong Kong and Japanese actors, including action star Yuen Biao, Abe Hiroshi, Katsu Shintaro, Loletta Lee, and Gloria Yip as the title character, Ashura. So-called the Holy Maiden of Hell, Ashura possesses immense power that could destroy humanity. The Buddhist monks trap her in a deep cave to keep her from falling into the hands of evil. The kind-hearted Abbot Jiku (Katsu Shintaro) grants her the wish to enjoy the pleasures of the human world for seven days, after which she'll have to be locked up forever.
