Kitano Takeshi brings his signature yakuza film style overseas in the 2000 film Brother , which premiered at the 57th Venice International Film Festival. Kitano stars as yakuza enforcer Yamamoto who escapes to Los Angeles after his clan gets wiped out in a gang war. There he reunites with his estranged half-brother Ken (Claude Maki, A Scene at the Sea ), a drug dealer. Yamamoto gathers Ken and his friends, including Denny (Omar Epps), to form a gang, and quickly grows and expands their power and turf. Their rising status, however, soon sets them on a collision course with the mafia.
