Detective Kaga Kyoichiro returns in the mystery film The Crimes That Bind , based on Higashino Keigo's 2013 novel Inori no Maku ga Orirutoki . Abe Hiroshi, who played the brilliant police detective in several TV series and the film Wings of the Kirin , is back in the famous role for the Shinzanmono series' concluding chapter that touches on Kaga's past and family. Besides Abe, series regular Mizobata Junpei reprises as Kaga's cousin and fellow detective Matsumiya Yuhei, Tanaka Rena as nurse Kanamori Tokiko, and Yamazaki Tsutomu as Kaga's father. Matsushima Nanako ( Ring ) joins the cast as a key figure in the mystery. The Crimes That Bind is directed by television veteran Fukuzawa Katsuo, who has helmed many TV dramas including ratings giant Hanzawa Naoki and the Abe vehicle Downtown Rocket . The body of a strangled woman is found in an apartment in Katsushika, Tokyo, and the apartment's owner is missing. Evidence indicates that the victim came to Tokyo to see stage director Asai Hiromi (Matsushima Nanao), an old acquaintance of Kaga (Abe Hiroshi). However, she has an alibi. In the course of the investigation, Matsuyama (Mizobata Junpei) notices a calendar with the names of 12 bridges written in it at the crime scene. This revelation shakes Kaga to his very core as he realizes that the murder case is connected to his late mother.
