Category : EntertainmentThe Story of Woo Viet (1981) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)Price: USD29.49 From the 1970s to 1990s, hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese refugees fled their native country, traveling by boat to the nearest open port of Hong Kong. The influx of the boat people and subsequent government measures, such as construction of closed refugee camps, became a prevalent topic in public discourse and policy, and an important memory of Hong Kong culture during those two decades. The plight of these Vietnamese refugees served as inspiration for acclaimed director Ann Hui who made three films in this period - Boy From Vietnam (1978), The Story of Woo Viet (1981), and Boat People (1982) - that came to be known as the Vietnam Trilogy. The second film in Hui's politically charged trilogy, The Story of Woo Viet features the star pairing of Chow Yun Fat and Cherie Chung in her film debut, seven years before they traded wistful looks in An Autumn's Tale . Chow, in one of his earliest and meatiest film roles, plays the title role of Woo Viet, a Vietnamese refugee who hopes to immigrate to the United States. While biding his time in a detention camp in Hong Kong, he witnesses a crime that places his life in danger. Woo Viet arranges for illegal passage to the U.S., and ends up in the Philippines with fellow refugee Cham Thanh (Cherie Chung) with whom he develops a romance. Stranded in Manila, he becomes a hitman to make ends meet. The Story of Woo Viet also co-stars Cora Miao and Shaw Brothers star Lo Lieh, and features action choreography from Ching Siu Tung.Other products from YesAsia |
