After the critical and commercial success of his 2014 directorial debut The Continent , writer-turned-filmmaker Han Han follows in 2017 with the even better received sophomore effort Duckweed , which passed the one billion yuan box-office benchmark in China. Starring Deng Chao ( Mermaid ) and Eddie Peng ( Operation Mekong ), the stirring comedy-drama incorporates many of the writer's pet narrative elements young rebels without a cause, flights of fancy, nineties nostalgia and clever humor into an original story about a wayward son reliving his father's legendary youth. Besides Peng and Deng as the father and son, Duckweed also co-stars top television actress Zanilia Zhao ( The Journey of Flower ), award-winning young actor Dong Zijian ( Mountains May Depart ), veteran King Shih Chieh and singer-songwriter Li Ronghao in his film debut. Reckless race car driver Tailang (Deng Chao) has risen against the odds to the top of the racing circuit, all while carrying a chip on his shoulder about his hard-headed father who never supported his racing dreams. While driving full speed with his father by his side, Tailang gets into an accident and unexpectedly wakes up in 1998 in his father's provincial hometown. He soon runs into his father Zhengtai (Eddie Peng), a big-hearted small-time hooligan who is fiercely loyal to his buddies and girlfriend Xiao Hua (Zanilia Zhao). Zhengtai promptly recruits Tailang into his motley trouble-raising crew, which is feuding with another gang. Amid street brawls and scrappy adventures, Tailang comes to meet the mother he never knew and gradually discovers what molded his father into the man he is now.
