Blockbuster director Tsutsumi Yukihiko ( Initiation Love ) adapts mystery writer Higashino Keigo's 2015 novel The House Where the Mermaid Sleeps , which hauntingly explores the meaning and morality of life and death through a mother's desperate actions to keep her child alive. Nishijima Hidetoshi ( Creepy ) and Shinohara Ryoko ( Unfair ) star as parents faced with a difficult decision after their daughter falls comatose. The film's supporting cast includes Sakaguchi Kentaro ( The 100th Love with You ), Kawaei Rina ( Ajin: Demi-Human ), Tanaka Tetsushi ( SPEC ), Tanaka Min ( Blade of the Immortal ) and Matsuzaka Keiko ( Legend of the Demon Cat ). Harima Kaoruko (Shinohara Ryoko) and Kazuaki (Nishijima Hidetosh) are separated and have already agreed to divorce. Then tragedy strikes. Their daughter drowns in an accident and is pronounced brain dead at the hospital, leaving the couple with a very difficult choice. Refusing to let go, Kaoruko displays increasingly erratic behavior to protect her child, while Kazuaki struggles to deal with his wife's unstable emotions. They use new medical technology from Kazuaki's company to extend the life of their daughter, the sleeping mermaid.
