TVB's top actress of the 90s and ratings guarantee Esther Kwan teams up with comedy regular Liu Wai Hung in the lighthearted 1996 Lunar New Year costume drama Mutual Affection . Originally an ATV artist, Kwan participated in many series after signing with TVB in 1993, but it was Mutual Affection that marked her big breakthrough as a leading actress. The success of the series launched her to the top of TV's A-list, and established the tough cookie image that would drive her later hits like Taming of the Princess , Lady Flower Fist , and Armed Reaction . Mutual Affection was also an important stepping stone for Gordon Lam, who landed his biggest role to date in the series after years of minor supporting gigs. After his popular turn in Mutual Affection , Lam graduated to a major role in Once Upon a Time in Shanghai the same year, and leading man status the following year. Mutual Affection also co-stars Chan Ka Fai, Gigi Fu, and Bessie Chan. Scholar Chan Kwai Seung (Liu Wai Hung) is an esteemed man of the letters, but spends most of his time indulging in vices with carousing buddy Su Dong Po (Gordon Lam). When Dong Po sets his eyes on Siu Dip (Gigi Fu), Seung decides to help his friend out by distracting Siu Dip's bossy maid Ngor (Esther Kwan). In the end, it is Seung who falls for Ngor, and the two get married. The honeymoon doesn't last long though. Ngor's strict hold over the household and her husband leads to endless clashes, and Seung soon falls back on his old ways. When Ngor discovers Seung has a mistress (Bessie Chan), she breaks all precedent and takes her husband to court.
