The tumultuous life and times of legendary Cantonese opera playwright Kong Yu Kau (1909-1984) comes to screen in the 1997 Hong Kong classic The Mad Phoenix . Directed by Clifton Ko, the film is based on the acclaimed same-titled stage play that also starred Tse Kwan Ho in the iconic role of the eccentric playwright. Tse Kwan Ho won Best Actor at the Golden Horse Awards for his performance, and The Mad Phoenix also received Best Screenplay at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Kong Yu Kau (Tse Kwan Ho), better known by the pen name Nam Hoi Sup Sam Long, was born in the early 20th century as the 13th son of a Qing Dynasty official. A famous opera playwright and composer of the 1920s and 30s, he was known for his musical works and also for his unbridled temperament. During college, he gave up his studies and went to Shanghai to pursue the girl he loved. During the war, he fought with members of his own army theater troupe. After the war, he hit hard times and was sent to a psychiatric hospital. In his final years, he wandered the streets in an apparent state of madness.
