Director Andrew Lau gives a new spin on the life story of China's controversial last empress, the Empress Dowager Cixi, in the 1995 film Lover of the Last Empress . Produced by Wong Jing, the film stars Chingmy Yau as the empress who first enters the palace as a maid after her family falls on hard times.
