John Woo returns to action with Manhunt , his highly anticipated remake of the same-titled 1976 Japanese crime thriller starring Takakura Ken. Woo pays homage to the legendary Japanese actor with a thriller that embraces bullet ballet, brotherhood, ballistic action and other hallmarks of the heroic bloodshed genre that he made famous. Based on a novel by Nishimura Juko, the original Manhunt was not only a classic in Japan, but also massively popular in China as the first foreign film to play in the mainland after the Cultural Revolution. Acclaimed Chinese actor Zhang Hanyu ( Operation Mekong ) steps into the role of the framed fugitive while Japanese actor Fukuyama Masaharu ( The Third Murder ) plays the detective on the chase. The throwback action fest's Pan-Asian cast also includes Chinese TV actress Stephy Qi, Korean actress Ha Ji Won and Japanese stars Kunimura Jun, Kurata Yasuaki, Sakuraba Nanami, Naoto Takenaka, Ikeuchi Hiroyuki and Saitoh Takumi. Chinese lawyer Du Qiu (Zhang Hanyu) has just completed work for a shady pharmaceutical company in Osaka and plans to leave for a new job in the States, despite the objections of the company boss Sakai (Kunimura Jun). After attending a company gathering, Du Qiu wakes up the next morning with a dead body beside him. Realizing he's been set up, Du Qiu goes on the run, but dogged detective Yamura (Fukuyama Masaharu) soon catches up. The two turn into unlikely partners on the dangerous mission to get to the bottom of the mystery.
