Even before starring in John Woo's A Better Tomorrow , Chow Yun Fat had already demonstrated an unparalleled charisma in Hong Kong 1941 which won him Best Actor at both the Golden Horse Awards and the Asian Pacific Film Festival in 1985. The film also captured the Best Cinematography award at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Directed by Leong Poh Chi, Hong Kong 1941 examines human nature and survival during wartime. Chow Yun Fat is Fay, a Peking opera actor who wants to illegally migrate to the States. He gets stuck in Hong Kong and works as a part-time coolie for a rice distributor. There, he meets Keung (Alex Man) and his fiancee Nam (Cecilia Yip), and the three gradually develop a subtle love triangle. In December 1941, Hong Kong falls to the Japanese army. When Fay joins the Japanese army as a Chinese recruit, he is seen as an enemy collaborator, and loses his friends' trust. In fact, Fay is secretly helping his compatriots escape from the Japanese army - after all acting was once his profession.
