Directed by Negishi Kichitaro ( Dog in a Sidecar ), Villon's Wife is one of several Osamu Dazai-based films released in 2009 to mark the 100th anniversary of the legendary writer's birth. Based on Osamu's semi-autobiographical 1947 novel, Villon's Wife depicts the tormented relationship between a strong, devoted wife and her philandering, alcoholic husband. Winning Best Actress at the 33rd Japan Academy Awards, Matsu Takako shines in the role of Sachi, a beautiful and warmhearted woman who not only endures but becomes strengthened by her cruel marriage. Acclaimed actor Asano Tadanobu saunters in and out of Sachi's life as Otami, a suicidal novelist who is as brilliant and charming as he is depressed and destructive. Set in the bustle and changes of postwar Japan, Villon's Wife also co-stars Hirosue Ryoko as Otami's lover and Tsumabuki Satoshi as Sachi's suitor.
