Classic 70s mecha manga and anime series Mazinger Z returns to screens with the animated film Mazinger Z/Infinity , which is set ten years after the final episode of the anime. Serialized from 1972 to 1974, Nagai Go's original manga revolves around a giant super robot called Mazinger Z and its pilot, Kabuto Koji, who takes up the mantle of defending humanity against mad scientist Dr. Hell and his army of mechanical monsters. In Mazinger Z/Infinity , set a decade after the final battle with Dr. Hell, Koji has left his piloting days behind to pursue science. However, with the return of an old nemesis and the rise of a new threat, Koji and Mazinger Z will be called upon to once again fight the forces of evil and protect the future of mankind. Watanabe Toshiyuki, the son of Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger 's original score composer Watanabe Chumei, is in charge of the music for Mazinger Z/Infinity . Mizuki Ichiro, the original singer of the Mazinger Z theme, did a new recording of the opening theme with a modernized arrangement for the soundtrack.
