Released in 1983, Hou Hsiao Hsien's fourth feature The Boys from Fengkuei marks the beginning of the filmmaking style that the Taiwan auteur would become known for. Hou has called this classic coming-of-age film his personal favorite and a major turning point of his career. Doze Niu, Chang Shih and Chao Peng Chue play the boys from Fengkuei, a fishing village in Penghu Island. While waiting for enlistment, the three directionless youth go off together to the big city of Kaohsiung. There, they struggle to make a life for themselves while meeting new people, dealing with unexpected changes, and experiencing the pains and trials of growing up.
