Styled like a road movie, Lee Du Yong's 1980 crime thriller classic The Last Witness follows a detective assigned to a mysterious murder case. Replete with clever plot twists and quick editing cuts, the film brilliantly captures the essence of the late 70s and early 80s in Korea. Originally based on a novel, The Last Witness was later re-adapted in 2001 by director Bae Chang Ho in the same-titled film starring Lee Jung Jae, Jung Jun Ho and Lee Mi Yeon. While seeking clues in Yang Dal Soo's murder case, detective Oh Byung Ho (Ha Myung Joong, Mother ) meets Kang Man Ho, a man from the victim's past whose testimony leads Oh to two prime suspects: Tae Young, the son of the victim's mistress Ji Hye (Jung Yun Hee, The One Love ), and Hwang Ba Woo (Choi Bool Am, The Grand Chef ) whose longtime grudge against the victim perfectly fits the motive. As it turns out, Hwang is being granted parole after serving 20 years in prison for the murder of a man named Han Dong Joo whose identity shocks the detective. To complicate the matter, a 20-year-old mystery linked to a North Korean militant leader reveals an awful truth about the murder case that has lust, betrayal, and revenge written all over it. This edition comes with a 52-page booklet and special features including digital restoration before/after featurette, still gallery and audio commentary by director Park Chan Wook, film critic Kim Young Jin, director Lee Du Yong, director Oh Seong Wook and Cine 21 chief editor Ju Sung Cheol.
