Bless This House takes its cue from Hollywood haunted house stories like The Amityville Horror , but adds generous doses of Eastern mysticism, social satire, and broad comedy to make this a uniquely Hong Kong production. More silly than scary, the film nonetheless manages several genuinely terrifying moments. Yu would eventually put his knack for making films that are both funny and frightening to use on the American horror movies Bride of Chucky (1998) and Freddy versus Jason (2003), both of which owe a debt to Bless This House . Bill Cheung (Tung) is a no-nonsense architect whose blithe disregard for feng shui literally comes back to haunt him when he moves with his wife and two young daughters to a new home with a dark past. Strange sounds in the night, disembodied voices, and ghostly apparitions begin to plague the Cheungs, while a mysterious stranger warns them of an impending catastrophe. The family eventually makes a horrifying discovery - the previous owner killed his own wife and two girls in a fit of madness before committing suicide, and now the spirits of the house's former occupants are trying to return to life by possessing the bodies of the new owners!
