Ghost in the Shell auteur Oshii Mamoru has made four live-action feature films in his career, the most recent being 2001's groundbreaking Polish-Japanese sci-fi co-production Avalon . Primarily filmed in Poland with a Polish cast and Polish dialogue, Avalon is very much in keeping with Oshii's style and aesthetic, playing with metaphysical themes in a strikingly rendered, technologically advanced and imagined world of the future. In the distant future, everyone is connected to an addictive virtual reality game called Avalon. In contrast to the mundane humdrum of the real world, the game takes players into a fantastical war-torn realm where they do battle with modern and medieval weapons of their choosing. Though the game is virtual, it has very real consequences for the players. As they enter higher levels, players let their spirits remain in the game, leaving their physical bodies to wither in a comatose state. When player Ash (Malgorzata Foremniak) discovers there is a secret hidden level in Avalon called Special A, she forms a team and embarks on a quest to find the level.
