In 1972, China presented Japan with two giant pandas to commemorate the normalization of relations between the two nations. In that same year, Miyazaki Hayao and Isao Takahata produced an animated film about a little girl who befriends two giant pandas. An early pre-Ghibli work from Japan's greatest animators, the simple and charming Panda! Go, Panda! is an exciting release for animation fans, especially since the film's two pandas are considered by many to be the design precursor to My Neighbor Totoro . Though not as visually grand or thematically complex as their later works, Panda! Go, Panda! clearly bears the mark of Miyazaki and Isao. The film was followed in 1973 with the sequel Panda! Go, Panda!: The Rainy Day Circus which is also included on this release. With her grandmother out of town, young Mimiko will be left home alone for a while, but she isn't worried at all. One day, an unexpected visitor turns up on her doorstep - a talking giant panda cub! Soon the cub's father shows up as well, drawn by the bamboo forest next to Mimiko's house. Happy as clam to have the company of her new and furry friends, Mimiko doesn't realize that her visitors actually escaped from the zoo. In Panda! Go, Panda!: The Rainy Day Circus , Mimiko and the pandas befriend a baby tiger who is looking for his mother.
