Yukisada Isao adapts Helter Skelter creator Okazaki Kyoko's 90s cult manga River's Edge into a grungy and intense coming-of-age tale that is as vividly human as it is darkly grim. Nikaido Fumi ( Scoop! ) and Yoshizawa Ryo ( Bleach ) lead the cast of anguished youth who navigate violence, sex, drugs and lies in a cruel world. River's Edge screened in the Panorama sidebar of the 68th Berlin International Film Festival. High school girl Wakakusa Haruna (Nikaido Fumi) becomes friends with gay classmate Yamada Ichiro (Yoshizawa Ryo), who often gets beaten up by Haruna's aggressive boyfriend (Uesugi Shuhei). Haruna comes to Ichiro's rescue, and he shows her a secret: a corpse at the river's edge that he discovered a while ago and now regularly visits when he wants to ease his mind.
