Produced by Stanley Kwan and directed by first-timer Luo Dong, New York New York is set in the gold-rush atmosphere of the nineties when China's era of economic reforms ushered in breakneck changes and a young generation eager to seek their fortunes abroad. But is life really better elsewhere? Ethan Ruan ( Paradise in Service ) and Du Juan ( See You Tomorrow ) play a pair of lovers whose American dreams run dry in this beautifully melancholic drama of love and loss. Just about everyone wants to go abroad, but hotel concierge Lu Tu (Ethan Ruan) is satisfied with his life in Shanghai with girlfriend Juan (Du Juan). Then one day, US-based entrepreneur Mr. Mi (Michael Miu) shows up to recruit workers for a luxury hotel in New York. Though Lu Tu is not interested in going to America, Juan very much is and chooses to leave first with Mr. Mi. When she arrives in New York, she quickly discovers that everything is a scam. By the time Lu Tu gets to New York, Juan has already become the lover of an Italian mob boss.
