Actor-turned-director Chen Sicheng continues his box office streak with the blockbuster mystery comedy Detective Chinatown 2 , the sequel to the 2015 hit starring Wang Baoqiang and Liu Haoran as a mystery-solving duo. Detective Chinatown 2 emerged from the competitive 2018 Chinese New Year box office race with a gross of 3.4 billion yuan, making it the third biggest Chinese film of all time to date. Besides going bigger, the sequel also goes farther, bringing the stars to the Big Apple for another twist-filled murder mystery and misadventure abroad. Wang Baoqiang and Liu Haoran, reprising as the bumbling bumpkin and his prodigy nephew, are joined by comedian Xiao Yang of Chopstick Brothers and Australian actress Natasha Liu Bordizzo from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny . Japanese star Tsumabuki Satoshi and Hong Kong veterans Yuen Wah and Kenneth Tsang also make special appearances in the film. Qin Feng (Liu Haoran) travels to New York to attend his uncle Tangren's (Wang Baoqiang) wedding, but it turns out there's no wedding. Tangren just wanted to lure Qin Feng over to participate in a crime-solving competition convened by Chinatown godfather Uncle Seven (Kenneth Tsang) whose grandson was recently murdered in a temple. Detectives who are part of the global Crimaster app network have all gathered and Qin Feng himself happens to be ranked #2 in the world on Crimaster. He and third-ranked rival Hiroshi (Tsumabuki Satoshi) both quickly narrow the search down to a suspect named Song Yi (Xiao Yang). After seeing Song Yi, however, Qin Feng deduces that he is not the killer. Song Yi latches onto Qin Feng and Tangren, and all three of them end up on the run from the police while racing to solve the mystery.
