Danny Lee has played cops countless times in pictures like Final Justice and The Killer , but never quite like the one he portrays in Thank You, Sir , a surprisingly sentimental coming-of-age drama from 1989. This time out, Lee takes a break from fighting crime on the streets of Hong Kong to wage a very different kind of battle one for the hearts and minds of an undisciplined yet gifted class of police cadets. Although he never achieved Chow Yun Fat levels of popularity, Lee proves himself capable of carrying a picture like Thank You, Sir on the strength of his acting talents. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he gets some support from one of the industry's leading ladies of yesteryear (Lisa Chiao Chiao, One-Armed Swordsman ), as well as a future celebrity in the making (Nick Cheung, Election ). Reassigned from the Regional Crime Unit to Commandant of the Police Cadet Academy, Inspector Lee (Danny Lee) finds the task of molding the raw recruits into Hong Kong's Finest every bit as challenging as keeping the peace in a crime-infested metropolis. The force has little hope for Lee's ragtag bunch of officers-in-training, but the perceptive Inspector sees the potential within his young pupils.
