In 2005, Jump! Boys , a simple documentary about a boys' gymnastics team, swept numerous awards and emerged as a surprise box office hit in Taiwan. The coach in the documentary is director Lin Yu Hsien's older brother, Ashin. Six years later, Lin turns his gymnast brother's rough-and-tumble youth into a narrative film, with Eddie Peng taking on the title role of a wayward athlete coming of age in early nineties Taiwan. Eddie Peng, who also starred in Lin's previous Exit No. 6 , underwent intense physical training for Jump Ashin! , results that can be seen readily onscreen. His performance garnered him a Best Actor nomination at the 48th Golden Horse Awards. One of Taiwan's highest-grossing films of the year, the inspiring sports drama also co-stars Ke Yu Lun ( Au Revoir Taipei ), Lin Chen Xi ( Taipei Exchanges ), and Chen Han Dian ( Monga ). Gymnastics has been Ashin's (Eddie Peng) greatest love since childhood, but his mother sees no future in it and forces him to quit. After giving up gymnastics, Ashin spends his days lazing around the family fruit stand and picking fights and chasing girls with his volatile buddy Pickles (Ke Yu Lun). The two are forced to flee their hometown of Yilan when they fall into trouble with the local gang. Ashin strays farther and farther from himself in the big city, but his heart will eventually bring him back to the sport he loves.
