Created in 1988 by Headgear, Patlabor is a police and crime procedural revolving around the Tokyo Metropolitan Police whose officers pilot mecha called Patlabors. The franchise includes manga, light novels, an anime series and multiple animated films, most notably Oshii Mamoru's 1989 classic Patlabor: The Movie . In 2014 and 2015, the Patlabor universe was revived in an ambitious live-action project titled The Next Generation -Patlabor- which consists of a 13-episode series split theatrically into seven parts and a feature film. A sequel to the original Patlabor timeline, The Next Generation is set in 2013 after the end of the Babylon Project. Division 2 of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police struggles to stay afloat amid budget cuts and Labors falling increasingly out of use, though Labor crime continues to be high. Mano Erina ( Tag ) leads Special Vehicle Section 2's third generation as pilot Izuminio Akira.
