Known on the festival circuit for acclaimed dramas like Ice Poison , Taiwan-based Burmese director Midi Z presents his most polished and high-profile film to date in The Road to Mandalay , which garnered six nominations at the 53rd Golden Horse Film Awards and won the Fedeora Award for Best Film in the Venice Days section of the 73rd Venice Film Festival. Like his previous films, Mandalay draws on the experiences and struggles of Burmese migrants. Midi Z regular Wu Ke Xi and Kai Ko ( You are the Apple of My Eye ) play two desperate illegal migrants trying to make a new life in a gritty and unwelcoming Bangkok. Lianqing (Wu Ke Xi) crosses illegally into Thailand to seek work and a better life. On the journey, she meets fellow migrant worker Guo (Kai Ko), who takes an immediate liking to her. The simple and devoted Guo plans to work in a factory in Bangkok, save up money and eventually return home. Lianqing has set higher goals: she wants to secure papers and become a legitimate worker so that she can one day escape even farther abroad. Despite hard toil and brushes with danger, she determinedly looks ahead for a way out, but harsh reality keeps closing in on both Lianqing and Guo.
