The highest-grossing film in Hong Kong movie history at the time of its release, Jackie Chan s Rumble in the Bronx would eventually receive a North American theatrical run in 1996. Bronx grossed over US$30 million dollars in the United States and made Chan a Hollywood sensation, paving the way for his work on the blockbuster Rush Hour movie series and years of international superstardom. Stanley Tong ( Police Story III: Supercop ) directs this action comedy about Ma Hon-Keung (Chan), a Hong Kong cop who vacations in the Bronx in New York City to attend the wedding of his uncle (Bill Tung). However, Ma runs afoul of a street gang terrorizing a local supermarket run by Elaine (Anita Mui), beginning a series of clashes that escalates when one of the gang members steals a stash of diamonds from a criminal syndicate. Soon Ma is fighting the criminals to retrieve the diamonds, protect his friends and return his vacation to some semblance of peace! Co-starring Francoise Yip ( Black Mask ), Rumble in the Bronx features plenty of Jackie Chan s inimitable comic acting, along with intricate fight choreography, dazzling stuntwork and an unexpected, over-the-top finale where Chan pilots a runaway hovercraft across the Bronx.
