Legendary veteran actress Yoshinaga Sayuri returns to Japan's snowy northern region in Sakura Guardian in the North , the final chapter of the North Trilogy after A Chorus of Angels and Year One in the North . Takita Yojiro ( Departures ) directs Nasu Machiko's script about a woman's strength and a family's loss and reunion over two decades and two generations. Set in 1945 and 1971, the film features a distinguished cast that includes Sakai Masato, Shinohara Ryoko, Abe Hiroshi and Sato Koichi. In 1945 in the final days of WWII, the Soviet army invades and seizes Sakhalin Island from Japan. Ezure Tetsu (Yoshinaga Sayuri) is forced to flee with her two sons while her husband (Abe Hiroshi) remains on the island to fight. Tetsu and her sons end up in Abashiri in Hokkaido. In 1971, Tetsu's son Shujiro (Sakai Masato) returns to Japan after finding success in the U.S. In Sapporo, Shujiro sees his estranged mother again for the first time in 15 years and finds that she is struggling to get by on her own. He takes her in, but Tetsu wants to return to Abashiri by herself. Shujiro accompanies her on a journey through Hokkaido and memories of the past.
