Sorachi Hideaki's best-selling sci-fi samurai manga series Gintama has been adapted into a live-action film! Set in an alternate-world late Edo period Japan that has been conquered by aliens, the delightfully odd and entertaining blockbuster stars Oguri Shun ( Lupin the Third ) in the leading role of Sakata Gintoki, an eccentric silver-haired samurai who once fought in the battle against the alien invasion. After the fall of the shogun government, Gintoki settled down into a layabout life running the Yorozuya odd-job business. Directed by Fukuda Yuichi who previously collaborated with Oguri on HK: Hentai Kamen , Gintama is chock-full of in-jokes and tongue-in-cheek references that will tickle anime and manga fans. Okada Masaki co-stars as Gintoki's childhood friend Katsura Kotaro who is part of the moderate underground resistance, while KinKi Kids' Domoto Tsuyoshi is antagonist Takasugi Shinsuke, a former comrade-in-arm who has turned radical. Other key characters include Suda Masaki and Hashimoto Kanna as Gintoki's Yorozuya partners Shimura Shinpachi and Kagura, Nagasawa Masami as Shinpachi's sister Tae, and Yagira Yuya, Yoshizawa Ryo and Nakamura Kankuro as members of the Shinsengumi police unit. Katsura's pet Elizabeth and Kagura's pet Sadaharu are also duly represented in the film in animal suit and CGI form. Stories spread around town of a serial killer with a powerful sword that has a life of its own. Even Katsura (Okada Masaki) disappears after a run-in with this brutal swordsman, much to the concern of the Yorozuya team. Meanwhile, Gintoki (Oguri Shun) gets hired by the Murata siblings, swordsmiths Tetsuya (Yasuda Ken) and Tetsuko (Hayami Akari), to recover a missing sword, and a large mysterious ship suddenly docks in town.
