Before becoming the toast of film festivals worldwide, Johnnie To directed crowd-pleasing commercial films, and The Fun, The Luck, & The Tycoon qualifies as one of his most beloved. This feel-good comedy stars Chow Yun Fat as Leung Po Sam a.k.a. Popo, the richest and possibly nicest man in all of Hong Kong. However, Popo's place among the elite comes with small personal sacrifices, among them the inability to choose his own wife. He's supposed to marry his spoiled cousin Cindy (Nina Li), but elects to run away in the middle of the night, taking on the guise of an ordinary, normal Joe in order to find his own bride. On his own in Hong Kong, Popo meets Ah Yuk (Sylvia Chang), a kind and unassuming restaurant owner, and he's immediately smitten. Popo applies for a job as a busboy at her restaurant, and takes pleasure in performing menial, everyday tasks while also growing closer to the woman he loves. However, Popo can't hide forever, and soon many people come looking for Hong Kong's richest and most eligible bachelor. Can he win the girl before he's spirited back to his hilltop mansion? The slapstick, situation comedy, and all-star cast (including legendary Hong Kong band Beyond) make The Fun, The Luck, & the Tycoon fun, but it's Chow Yun Fat's genial, effortlessly charming star turn that make this film a special one. Chow even turns up in a second role, as an urbane taxi cab driver who gives Popo a ride.
