Helmed by New Wave director Tony Au ( Dream Lovers ), The Last Affair is an important early drama from Chow Yun Fat in the fledgling years of his film career. By 1983, Chow had already appeared in close to twenty films, but he was still known first and foremost as a television actor, this being the same year that his classic dramas Angels and Devils and Radio Tycoon hit the small screen. His film career gained speed in the early to mid-80s, exploding to iconic proportions in 1986 with A Better Tomorrow , but in 1983 Chow was still somewhere in between, already a huge star thanks to television, but not yet able to fully convert that fame to the silver screen. The Last Affair was an equally important stepping stone for Chow's co-star, fellow TVB artist Carol Cheng, here making an impressive feature film debut that garnered her Best New Performer accolades at the 3rd Hong Kong Film Awards. Playing lovers again after their memorable pairing in the TV series The Good, The Bad and The Ugly , Chow Yun Fat and Carol Cheng star as a young couple who meet and fall in love in Paris. When Chow's capricious young art student allows one too many women into his life, however, love turns to hate and eventually tragedy. The Last Affair is also particular notable for its aesthetics, with award-winning cinematography from Bill Wong and art direction from William Chang Suk Ping, who would later serve as art director for all of Wong Kar Wai's films.
