The auteur rounds up his regulars Abe Hiroshi ( Still Walking ) and Maki Yoko ( Like Father, Like Son ) as a divorced couple and Kiki Kirin ( Our Little Sister ) as a shrewd, aging mother for this delicate exploration of family and fatherhood. Kore-eda continues to do what he does best in this gently realistic depiction of a grown man who never quite got his life together, but is in his own way trying to make amends with his failures and responsibilities. Ryota (Abe Hiroshi) once published an award-winning novel, but that was 15 years ago. Now he's a divorced private detective who's late on his child support but still gambles away what little money he has in hopes of a windfall. His ex-wife Kyoko (Maki Yoko) seems to have found someone new already, and she's threatening to withhold visitation rights if he doesn't pay up. Predictably, Ryota scours his parents' home in hopes of finding something to pawn, but his mother Yoshiko (Kiki Kirin) has already discarded his late father's possessions. Kyoko brings their son Shingo (Yoshizawa Taiyo) over for the day, but with a typhoon coming in, Yoshiko convinces them to stay for the night, giving Ryota a chance to reconnect with his family.Other products from YesAsia |
