Kurosawa Kiyoshi challenges the darkness of history in the suspense drama Wife of a Spy , which won him the Silver Lion for Best Director at the 77th Venice Film Festival. Set in 1940s Kobe, the film stars Takahashi Issey and Aoi Yu as a married couple again after Romance Doll . Takahashi plays Fukuhara Yusaku, a well-heeled trader who witnesses great atrocities while traveling in Manchuria and wants to reveal the truth to the world. Working with Kurosawa for the third time, Aoi Yu plays Satoko, who believes in her husband, even if she gets called the wife of a spy. As the Pacific War breaks out, the fate of the couple is thrown asunder by the turbulence of the times. Wife of a Spy was shot in 8K Super Hi-Vision and co-written by Kurosawa with Asako I & II director Hamaguchi Ryusuke and Nohara Tadashi. The wartime drama also co-stars Higashide Masahiro as a military officer who is Satoko's childhood friend and Bando Ryota as Yusaku's nephew.
