Action heavyweights Vincent Zhao and Sammo Hung collaborate for the first time in the period war epic God of War , directed by Gordon Chan ( The Four ). Zhao stars as Ming Dynasty general Qi Jiguang, a 16th-century national hero figure noted for defending China's eastern coast from Japanese pirates. Hung plays general Yu Dayou, while Wan Xi ( Paradise in Service ) co-stars as Qi's strong-willed wife and Japanese action legend Kurata Yasuaki ( Fist of Legend ) as the leader of the enemy army. Filled with impressive battle and action sequences, God of War shot many of its scenes in the actual historical locales of the depicted battles. In the Ming Dynasty during the reign of Emperor Jiajing, Japanese pirates regularly threaten the eastern coast of the Chinese empire. In 1557, the province of Cengang gets taken by pirates, and Ming troops led by Yu (Sammo Hung) are unable to breach the pirate stronghold after months of battle. Unbeknownst to the Ming, the unruly pirates are working with elite samurai forces, led by seasoned warrior Kumazawa (Kurata Yasuaki), that are looking to expand territory. Newly promoted General Qi (Vincent Zhao) arrives in Cengang with new military tactics and breaks through the defenses, but the pirates manage to get away. While Qi recruits and retrains soldiers to build a new army, the pirates and samurai also regroup and lay traps in preparation for the greater battle ahead.
