Written and co-directed by Wong Jing, the 2017 period fantasy The Golden Monk is set during the Southern Song Dynasty in a Hangzhou that is being terrorized by demons. Zheng Kai ( Shadow ) stars as monk Butong who leaves his temple in the mountains to go fight demons. Along the way, he encounters demon hunter Jingjing (Kitty Zhang, Mermaid ), his star-crossed lover of a previous life. They were banished from heaven centuries ago for their forbidden love affair, and have gone through many reincarnations without recognizing each other. The two, along with sword master Dugu Wubai (Hsieh Yi Lin), team up to eliminate demons. However, the return of a powerful enemy from Butong's past throws the mortal world into unprecedented danger.
