In the Room 's setting is based on the historic New 7th Storey Hotel, which started out as a five-star establishment in the fifties and evolved eventually into a backpacker's hotel before getting demolished in 2008. In the Room begins in 1942 on the eve of the Japanese occupation that will separate a British expat (Daniel Jenkins) from his local lover (Koh Boon Pin), a married man who must stay behind. A cabaret dancer (Josie Ho) plies her striptease skills in the colorful fifties while a musician (Ian Tan) has a memorable encounter with a maid (Nadia Ar) before his death. In the seventies, a Thai transgender woman (Netnaphad Pulsavad) meets with her lover (Wasurat Unaprom) before her surgery. In the eighties, a married Japanese woman (Nishino Sho) rejects the love of her local partner (Lawrence Wong).
