Screened in the Panorama sidebar of the 65th Berlin International Film Festival, the gay drama How to Win at Checkers (Every Time) unfolds a poignant tale of coming of age and loss of innocence from the economic fringes of Thai society. Korean-American writer-director Josh Kim's debut feature is based on short stories from Rattawut Lapcharoensap's book Sightseeing . Popular actor/model Toni Rakkaen stars as the adult Oat, who recalls his experiences as an 11-year-old boy (Ingkarat Damrongsakkul) at a crossroads. The orphaned boy worries for both himself and his older brother Ek (Thira Chutikul) when the latter is called for the military draft lottery. Besides the looming shadow of possible conscription, Ek faces possible separation from his boyfriend Jai (Arthur Navarat), who is also participating in the draft lottery.
