Garnering 16 nominations at the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards, The Sparring Partner is an exciting mix of crime thriller and courtroom drama. Directed by first-time director Tin Ho and produced by Philip Yung, the film features an experienced cast of theater actors. The Sparring Partner is inspired by a gruesome and sensational family murder case that happened in 2013. Trial begins for Henry Cheung (Yeung Wai Lun) and his friend Angus Tong (Mak Pui Ting) who stand accused of murdering and dismembering Cheung's parents in Tong's apartment. Prosecutor Allen Chu (Michael Chow) posits that the two premeditated and committed murder together, while experienced lawyers Wilson Ng (Jan Lamb) and Carrie Yau (Louisa So) serve as defense counsel for Cheung and Tong, respectively. As each side presents their questions and arguments, unclear aspects of the case are brought up, and Tong completely denies all allegations. The truth gets increasingly muddled as the prosecution and defense verbally spar in heated debates. In the jury room, nine jurors of different backgrounds vie to speak, and get caught up in a debate between right and wrong.
