Laha Mebow ( Lokah Laqi ) became the first Taiwan female director and first indigenous filmmaker to win Best Director at the Golden Horse Awards with her acclaimed family drama Gaga . The Taiwan film about the daily lives of a multi-generation indigenous Atayal family also garnered Best Supporting Actress at the 59th Golden Horse Film Awards for Kagaw Piling. The title Gaga , which means words handed down from ancestors in the Atayal language, is a term that encompasses the Atayal people's outlook and values on life. Following the rules, norms and customs of the Atayal tribe is the essence of Gaga. The film keenly explores Atayal culture, family and community amid the intersection of indigenous traditions with modern Taiwan life. Three generations of the Hayung family follow the tradition of Gaga with Grandpa (Wilang Noming) as their spiritual pillar. Granddaughter A-li (Lin Ting Li of AKB48 Team TP) returns home from working abroad in New Zealand for two years. Soon after, Grandpa passes away in his sleep. In order to deal with family land ownership issues, A-li's father (Wilang Lalin) decides to run for village chief to raise the family status, even though Grandpa was against this when he was alive. Meanwhile, Grandma (Kagaw Piling) finds out that A-li is pregnant.
