Directed by Stanley Kwan ( Rouge ), the award-winning 2001 film Lan Yu is based on an online novel about the gay experience in China. Backdropped by the social changes of the late 1980s to 90s, the film revolves around the decade-long love affair of two men in Beijing played by Hu Jun and Liu Ye. Lan Yu won Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Actor for Liu Ye at the 2002 Golden Horse Awards. In 1988, 27-year-old businessman Chen Handong (Hu Jun) and 18-year-old student Lan Yu (Liu Ye) meet and begin a tumultuous physical and emotional relationship. In the ensuing years, they intermittently come together and then apart due to the closeted Handong's refusal to commit. This edition comes with director's Q&A.
