Taiwanese New Wave director Wan Jen confronts the tragedy and trauma of Taiwan's White Terror period of political repression in his 1995 classic Super Citizen Ko , a follow-up to Super Citizen from a decade earlier. The film revisits the pain, guilt and profound loss of the era, during which thousands were imprisoned and executed, through the self-examining journey of an elderly survivor played by Lin Yang ( A City of Sadness ), who won Best Actor at the 32nd Golden Horse Awards. In the 1950s, Ko (Lin Yang) was arrested for participating in a political study group and sentenced to jail. While in prison, two people died because of him: the friend he inadvertently betrayed was executed and his wife committed suicide. Released from prison after 16 years, Ko isolated himself in a remote nursing home for another decade before finally reuniting with his estranged daughter and the outside world. Consumed by feelings of guilt, Ko sets out to meet people of the past, from his peers to the officer who arrested him, in hopes of finding the whereabouts of his late friend's tomb.
