Chinese auteur Zhang Yimou takes on the period espionage genre with Cliff Walkers , which was nominated in six categories at the 15th Asian Film Awards. Starring Zhang Yi, Yu Hewei, Qin Hailu, Zhu Yawen and Liu Haocun, the spy thriller is set in Manchukuo in the 1930s. As visually lavish as it is narratively twisty, Cliff Walkers packs in the suspense, secrets and betrayals for a tense and dangerous cat-and-mouse game in the ice-cold atmosphere of northeastern China. The film is written by novelist Quan Yongxian, who previously wrote the 2012 award-winning Manchukuo-set spy series The Brink . In order to obtain evidence of Japan's crimes against humanity, China sends agents Zhang Xianchen (Zhang Yi), Wang Yu (Qin Hailu), Wang Chuliang (Zhu Yawen) and Zhang Lan (Liu Haocun) to the northeast on a secret mission to rescue a compatriot. However, intel about their arrival gets leaked, and the four are targeted by the enemy as soon as they arrive in Harbin.
