Written and directed by Jamie Luk ( The Case of the Cold Fish ), the 1988 classic King of Stanley Market weaves together the romantic stories of vendors at one of Hong Kong's most famous street markets. This eighties Hong Kong comedy boasts quite the cast with Richard Ng, Sylvia Chang, Lydia Shum, Elaine Jin, Lowell Lo, Charlie Chin, Sandra Ng and Derek Yee. Fu (Richard Ng) runs a jeans shop in Stanley Market that is popular with tourists. Fu's mother (Lydia Shum) hopes that he will get married soon, but he's still single. Tour guide May (Elaine Kam) often brings her tour groups to Fu's shop, leading him to think that she likes him. In actuality, she only has eyes for caf owner Hung (Lowell Lo). One day, Kwun (Sylvia Chang) opens a new clothing shop opposite Fu's shop. The two constantly argue over business at first, but eventually become friends after Fu lends a helping hand to Kwun. Over time, Fu realizes that he's fallen for Kwun.
